THE WOODS
Destroyed and burned migrant camps in Calais
Since 2003, the Jungles have multiplied near places of transit like Calais, which has become a point of fixation for migrants. In the Industrial Zone of the Dunes where trucks line up waiting to be loaded, hundreds of migrants survive in makeshift camps on sandy and wooded land, abandoned. The shelters are made of all kinds of salvage materials: pallets, boards, tarpaulins, blankets, boxes and ropes. In 2009, when the camps were dismantled but inaccessible to excavators for shaving, they were evacuated and burned to prevent migrants from resettling. Photographs taken after the intervention of the police.
