In November 2002, the French government ordered the closure of the Red Cross Center which welcomes migrants in Calais to Sangatte. Most of them find themselves thrown out on the street at the dawn of winter. Volunteers then gathered to organize food and clothing distributions and decided after some time to give themselves a legal existence by founding the SALAM Association .
